Hougen Manufacturing, Inc. has released a new portable magnetic drill, the HMD918, which reportedly offers a major upgrade to depth of cut in the company’s line of magnetic drills. The HMD918 has a high-torque motor and extended 6-in. drilling depth, giving metal fabricators plenty of options for drilling deep holes in solid material or in multiple stacked plates.

The HMD918 includes a pressurized coolant bottle and system. The 2-gal. bottle easily attaches to the drill arbor and provides pressurized coolant to the cutter regardless of drill position. Other standard Hougen features include a pilot light for low-light conditions that allows the operator to line up each hole quickly and accurately in all lighting conditions. Powering the drill is a proprietary high-torque two-speed motor designed to maximize tool life and increase torque when using large-diameter cutters and drilling deep holes. The two-stage magnet increases magnetic holding power by 30 percent when the motor is turned on, saving energy and increasing magnet life.

Among additional features: a larger housing and an ergonomic carrying handle, along with a cutout to hold a hex wrench; reversible feed handles; and a d-ring on the back of the magnet for quick attachment of the safety chain. The HMD918 weighs 44.2 lb., measures 265⁄16 by 71⁄2 by 1213⁄16 in., and provides drilling capacities from 13⁄16- to 2-in. dia.
